Preparation Method :

  • Cover and cook the lentils with water until tender. Mash and allow it to cool.
  • Mix the cream, yogurt and corn flour in a bowl, stir into the lentils in the pan.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of fat in a wok or large pan and fry the onion, ginger, green chillies and the tomato until the onion is soft.
  • Add the ground spices with salt and fry for another 2 minutes. Stir into the lentil mixture and mix well. Reheat, transfer to a warm serving dish.
  • Heat the remaining fat in a frying pan over a low heat and fry the garlic slices with the remaining chillies until golden brown.
  • Pour over the lentils with the garlic and chilli just before serving.


  • 150 grams black lentils, soaked, rinsed and drained 
  • 100 grams plain yogurt
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • ¾ teaspoon chilli powder
  • 50 grams red split lentils, soaked, rinsed and drained
  • 100 grams double cream
  • 1 teaspoon corn flour 
  • 50 ml Cooking oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 inches piece fresh root ginger, crushed
  • 4 fresh green chillies, chopped 
  • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 2 garlic cloves, sliced
  • Salt, to taste 
  • Coriander sprigs and sliced red chilli, to garnish
