Preparation Method :

  • Soak the dal in water for 30 minutes, drain, then boil the dal with the salt and turmeric until just cooked but not mashed. Drain off any excess water.
  • Heat the oil in a kadai. Add the cumin seeds and asafoetida. Once the cumin seeds start to change colour, add the ginger and green chilli and saute for 30 seconds.
  • Mix in the chilli powder, cooked dal and lemon juice. Cook until dry, stirring lightly, taking care not to mash the dal. Garnish with the coriander leaves.


  • 500 grams split green gram, skinless
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 2 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • Pinch of asafoetida
  • 5cm piece root ginger, chopped
  • 2 green chilli, chopped
  • 2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 4 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoon chopped fresh coriander leaves
