Preparation Method :

  • Add in the drained pulses with the water in a large pan . Bring to the boil, cover and simmer until soft.
  • Heat the oil in heavy pan and fry the mustard seeds until they begin to splutter.
  • Add the onion, garlic, ginger and chili and fry for at least 5 minutes. Add the spinach and cook until the spinach is dry and the liquid has been absorbed.
  • Stir in the remaining spices and salt and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add the cooked spinach to the lentils and cook for about 5 minutes. Serve hot.


  • 200 grams chana dhal , washed and soaked for 30 mins
  • 250 grams frozen spinach, thawed 
  • 1 tablespoon Cooking oil
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder 
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander 
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala 
  • ¼ teaspoon black mustard seeds
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 in piece fresh root ginger, grated 
  • 1 fresh red chilli, finely chopped 
  • 200 ml water 
  • Salt to taste
