Preparation Method :

  • Soak dal in hot water for 15 minutes and grind coarsely with the rest of the masala ingredients.
  • Chop capsicum into small square pieces.
  • Steam dal masala in a rice-cooker for 20 minutes. Remove, cut with knife and keep under the fan to cool. When cooled enough, crumble well with fingers. Keep aside.
  • Heat a large quantity of oil in a pan and splutter the mustard seeds. Now add the curry leaves and the crumbled dal. Stir well for 3 minutes in low fire.
  • In another pan add 3 teaspoons of oil and add the chopped capsicum and the turmeric powder.
  • Stir well over medium fire for a minute and close lid for a minute. Open lid, add salt and stir. Now add this to the 'paruppu usili'.
  • Taste and add required salt, chilly powder or asafoetida powder. The 'usili' should be a little sticky and soft. Remove from fire.


  • 800 grams of Capsicum
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • Curry leaves a few
  • 3 ladles Sesame oil
  • Salt for taste


  • 400 gram of Thoor dal
  • 4 tablespoon Asafoetida powder
  • 1teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 10 Red chillies
  • Salt to taste
