Preparation Method :

  • Pressure-cook the rice and green gram dal with the measured water and 1 cup of milk. Make sure not to use the weight. Set aside.
  • Dissolve the jaggery in a cup water and cook on low heat till the jaggery melts.
  • Strain the jaggery into another pan to remove the dirt.
  • Place pan with syrup on the heat and stir till it becomes slightly sticky. Add the cooked rice and dal.
  • Heat the ghee and fry the cashew nuts and raisins and add to the pongal.
  • Add the powdered cardamoms, cloves, nutmeg and saffron. Mix well.
  • Serve hot.


  • 150 grams uncooked rice
  • 200 ml milk
  • 350 grams powdered jaggery
  • 75 grams green gram dal, dry roasted
  • 75 grams ghee
  • 2 tablespoon cashew nuts
  • 2 tablespoon seedless raisins
  • 6 green cardamoms, powdered
  • 2 cloves, powdered
  • A small piece of nutmeg, grated
  • A pinch of saffron strands
