Preparation Method :

  • Mix the fresh chilli paste, garlic paste, turmeric powder and salt in a bowl. Marinate chicken with the turmeric mixture in a cool place for 20-30 minutes.
  • Heat the oil in a pan and cook the onions till they are golden. Add in the shredded ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and bay leaf.
  • Stir for a minute or two till the spices start to change colour.
  • Add in the marinated chicken, red chilli powder and salt. Continue to stir to prevent the onions from burning.
  • Add in the ground coconut paste, stirring and add in a cup of water. Simmer to low flame and cook for 10-12 minutes.
  • As the gravy thickens stir in the yogurt and keep stirring till the chicken is done.
  • Check and adjust the seasoning. Stir in the chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.


  • 1 kg Large chunks of chicken with the bone
  • 50 grams Chopped onion
  • 50 grams Yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh chillies ground to a paste
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic paste
  • 2 tablespoon Cooking oil
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon Shredded ginger
  • 3 Cinnamon sticks  
  • 6 Cardamom pods
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 2 teaspoon Chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Juice of one lemon
  • Roasted and ground to Paste ( Spicy Paste)
  • 150 grams Copra grated
  • 2 tablespoon Coriander seeds
  • 4-6 dried red chillies
  • 1 tablespoon Poppy seeds
