Preparation Method :

  • Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed pan and sprinkle in the star anise, cinnamon, cardamom and peppercorns.
  • When the spices swell up and start to change colour, add in the onions and stir them on medium heat till they are golden.
  • Add the garlic, continue to stir for a minute or two, add in the tomatoes and cook till they are pulpy.
  • Add in the meat with turmeric, fresh chillies and salt, stir rapidly on high heat for 3-5 minutes.
  • Pour in 3 cups of water and simmer to low flame for about 20-30 minutes.
  • Add the potatoes and cook for another 15-20 minutes or until the meat is tender and the potatoes are cooked through.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil till the sauce is thick. Taste and adjust seasoning and serve hot.


  • 750 grams Lamb cut into medium sized chunks, cleaned, washed and drained
  • 250 grams Potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes
  • 150 grams onions, chopped
  • 75 grams tomatoes, chopped
  • 45 grams garlic, chopped
  • 3 tablespoon fresh chillies, chopped
  • 45 ml IDHAYAM Sesame Oil
  • 4-6 Star anise
  • 4-6 Cinnamon stick
  • 6 pods Cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon Black peppercorns
  • 1½ teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
