Preparation Method :

  • Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pan. Splutter mustard and split peas, then add red chillies.
  • Add the onions, garlic, ginger, curry leaves and turmeric. Cook for 5 minutes.
  • Add tomatoes and cook till soft and then add the chicken.
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook covered till chicken is tender and the gravy reduces.
  • While cooking skim and discard any oil that surfaces.


  • 2 kilogram chicken, cut to medium size pieces.
  • 4 tablespoons black mustard seeds
  • 6 dried red chillies
  • 2 tablespoon yellow split peas
  • 500 grams thinly sliced onions
  • 10 cloves of garlic crushed
  • 2 tablespoon finely grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 500 grams tomatoes
  • A sprig of curry leaves
  • Sesame oil
  • Salt to taste
