Preparation Method :

  • Rinse the fish fillet and pat dry. Prick with fork. Combine the turmeric, garlic, lemon juice and 1 teaspoon salt. Rub this mixture into the fish. Refrigerate for 2 - 3 hours.
  • Roast the cumin, coriander and peppercorns, cardamom over medium heat until fragrant. Allow to cool. Grind it to a powder. Combine ginger and chilly.
  • Heat the oil in a heavy-bottom pan over medium heat and add the onions and ground spice mix. Cook gently until aromatic and the onions transparent.
  • Increase the heat to a high and add tomatoes, 1 cup water and tamarind. Bring to boil. Then reduce to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse the marinade off the fish and chop into pieces.
  • Add to the pan with salt to taste. Let it simmer till fish done. Stir in chopped coriander leaves.
  • Served best with rice.


  • 2 kilogram of fillets of any firm white fish, skinless
  • 2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 4 cloves of garlic crushed
  • 4 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons coriander seeds
  • 2 teaspoon white peppercorns
  • 6 bruised pods of cardamom
  • 5 tablespoons of finely chopped ginger
  • 4 red chillies thinly sliced
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 5 tomatoes diced
  • 4 tablespoons tamarind extract
  • 4 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
