Preparation Method :

  • Heat the oil in a frying pan; add mustard seeds and Bengal gram. When the seeds start crackling, add water and bring to the boil. Reduce heat, add semolina and mix by stirring constantly.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool. Add green chilli paste and knead to thick dough.
  • Divide the dough equally into 5 balls. Pat the balls on a wet cloth to make thick rotis.
  • Heat a tawa and lay a roti flat on it and fry with enough oil on both sides. Remove and repeat till all the rotis are fried.


  • 420 grams fine semolina
  • 500 ml water
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds  
  • 1 teaspoon bengal gram
  • Cooking oil for frying

Ground to a paste

  • 75 grams onions, small, chopped
  • 2 tablespoon yogurt, sour
  • 8-9 green chillies
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • A pinch asafoetida  
  • 1 tablespoon green coriander, finely chopped
  • Few curry leaves
