Preparation Method :

  • In cold running water rinse the lentils . Put into a pan with the stock. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for about 10 -12 minutes. Keep the lentils and stock aside.
  • Heat the oil in a large heavy pan and fry the cumin seeds leaves for few minutes.
  • Add the onion, ginger and chili and fry for about 3-5 minutes. Stir in the cumin, ground coriander, salt and chili powder with 2 tablespoon water.
  • Add the tomatoes and the chicken pieces to the spices. Cover and cook for about 10 minutes.
  • Add the lentils and stock, half the chopped fresh coriander and the garam masala.
  • Cook for a further 10 minutes or until the chicken is tender. Garnish with the remaining fresh coriander and serve with spiced plain and yellow rice.


  • 100 grams green lentils
  • 500 ml chicken with stock
  • 1 tablespoon IDHAYAM sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 curry leaves
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cm piece fresh root ginger, chopped
  • 1 fresh green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 400 grams can chopped tomatoes pieces, skinned
  • 100 grams chopped fresh coriander (cilantro)
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • Plain and yellow rice, to serve
