Preparation Method :

  • Soak tamarind in hot water & extract juice.
  • Cook rice.It should be cooked half.then only each the rice grain will be separate
  • Heat 4 teaspoons of oil and allow mustard seeds to splutter. Add dal,red chilies and roast; now add peanuts, curry leaves, tamarind extract, turmeric powder and salt. stir well to mix and pressure cook for 3 whistles. open lid and thicken if required.
  • Add the rest of the sesame oil.
  • Mix with steamed rice. keep 'tamarind rice' for a couple of hours before serving.
  • Serve with papads. 


  • 1 kg rice
  • 2 large lemon sized tamarind
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 200 gram roasted unsalted peanuts
  • 1 teaspoon asafoetida powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal
  • a few curry leaves
  • 4 red chilies
  • 200 ml sesame oil
  • salt to taste
