Preparation Method :

  • Heat the ghee in a large saucepan. Add the onion and fry, for about 1-2 minutes.
  • Simmer to low flame, add the ginger, garlic and turmeric, stir-fry for a minute or two.
  • Add the rice and dhal to the mixture and mix gently. Adjust seasoning with salt, to taste.
  • Add in the measured water and bring to the boil. Simmer to low flame and cook, covered for about 20-25 minutes.
  • Transfer the cooked rice and lentils to a serving dish and serve immediately.


  • 250 grams basmati rice, cleaned and rinsed
  • 500 ml water
  • 150 grams masoor dhal, cleaned and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoon ghee
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 inch fresh ginger root, finely chopped
  • 4-5 fresh garlic cloves, crushed
  • Salt, to taste
  • A pinch of turmeric
