Preparation Method :

  • Wash and drain the rice. Heat the oil and fry the onions along with the spices over a medium heat until the onions are golden brown.
  • Add the salt and rice and stir, using a slotted spoon so that the rice is not damaged.
  • Pour in the water and bring to the boil, lower the heat, until the rice is cooked. Serve hot.


  • 500 grams basmati rice
  • 100 grams  ghee or unsalted butter
  • 75 grams onions, peeled and sliced
  • 4 bay leaves
  • 3 black peppercorns
  • 3 green cardamoms
  • ½ teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 700 ml water
