Preparation Method :

  • Soak the black gram dal in 2 cups of water for hours. Drain well.
  • Grind the dal to a smooth batter, adding the green chillies, salt and asafoetida powder.
  • Add the chopped onions, cabbage, coriander leaves and green peas to the batter. Mix well.
  • Heat oil in a kadhai or wok. Wet both your hands. Take a ladle of batter and place it on the palm of your left hand.
  • Flatten the batter and make a hole in the centre. Slip the batter gently into the oil.
  • Fry till golden brown and crisp. Drain on a sheet of kitchen paper.
  • Serve hot with chutney.


  • 150 grams black gram dal
  • 1 large onion, chopped fine
  • 75 grams finely chopped cabbage
  • 2 tablespoon shelled green peas
  • 4 green chillies, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon asafoetida powder
  • A bunch of coriander leaves, chopped fine
