Preparation Method :

  • Heat the oil in a non-stick saucepan. Add the cumin and onion, sauté for about 2-3 minutes or until just coloured.
  • Add the chili and ginger, followed by the rice, lentils, water, spices, salt and pepper. Bring to the boil for about 2 minutes.
  • Simmer to low flame, cover and cook for about 20-25 minutes or until the rice and lentils are tender.
  • Remove the lid and cook until the rice has a thick porridge-like consistency, mashing some of the rice and lentils with the back of a spoon.
  • Stir in the lemon juice, adjust the seasoning, and serve hot.



  • 500 ml hot water
  • 25 grams lentils, cleaned, rinsed, soaked and drained
  • 1 teaspoon Cooking oil
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 25 grams brown rice, washed, soaked and drained
  • ½ small onion, sliced
  • 1 green chilli, left whole
  • ¼ inch peeled fresh ginger
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • ¼ teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Lemon juice, to taste
