Preparation Method :

  • Add tamarind in boiling water and extract juice after 10 minutes, (or if using puree, take 2 teaspoons).
  • Soak thoor dal in hot water for 15 minutes and pressure-cook for 5 whistles.
  • Chop drumstick into 2 ½ inch length pieces.
  • Heat oil and allow the mustard seeds to splutter first. Then add the red chilly cut in to small pieces Stir in oil for a minute and keep aside.
  • In a pressure-pan, add tamarind extract, a little water, chopped drumsticks, sambhar powder, salt, and Asafoetida and pressure-cook it for a whistle.
  • Add the cooked dal and the mustard seeds and stir over flame.
  • Serve hot with rice.


  • 20 pieces of drumstick
  • 200 grams of thoor dal
  • 2 teaspoons of sambhar powder
  • 2 lemon-sized tamarind
  • ½ teaspoon of Asafoetida
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1 Red Chilly
  • 1 teaspoon of Cooking oil
  • Salt to taste
