Preparation Method :

  • Skin the small onions.
  • Soak thoor dal for 15 minutes and pressure-cook for 5 whistles.
  • Soak the tamarind and extract the juice.
  • Chop coriander leaves for 3 tablespoons.
  • Heat the oil in a pressure-pan and add the mustard seeds to splutter. Then add methi seeds and red chillies.
  • Next add onions and saute for half a minute before adding sambhar powder, tamarind juice, asafoetida, salt and some of the curry leaves.
  • Cover pressure-pan and cook till the first whistle.
  • Open after cooker cools and add the dal and rest of the curry leaves.
  • Stir for a minute till it thickens and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with rice and any form of vegetables.


  • 150 grams of small onions
  • 2 teaspoon of asafoetida powder
  • 150 gram of thoor dal
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 3 teaspoons of sambhar powder
  • 1 teaspoon of methi seeds
  • Medium lemon-sized tamarind
  • 2 Red Chilly
  • 1 teaspoon of Cooking oil
  • A few curry leaves
  • 3 tablespoon of coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
