Preparation Method :

  • Cook the dal for about 15 - 20 minutes with salt, turmeric and water.
  • Heat oil and add all the ingredients of the baghar. When the mustard seeds splutter, add the slit green chillies and the chopped vegetables. Fry for 5 minutes.
  • Add the tamarind pulp, salt, turmeric and sambhar powder. Cover and simmer on a low heat till the vegetables are tender.
  • Add the cooked dal and simmer for 5 minutes till everything blends.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot.


  • 200 grams mixed vegetables 
  • 2 green chillies - slit lengthways 
  • 100 grams red gram
  • 3 teaspoon sambhar powder 
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon rice flour - optional 
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp 
  • Salt to taste
  • Sprigs of fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

Ingredients for Baghar 

  • 2 tablespoon Cooking oil
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds 
  • ¼ teaspoon asafoetida powder 
  • ¼ teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds 
  • 1 dry red chilli, a few curry leaves
