Preparation Method :

  • Clean and slit the pomfrets vertically on both sides of the bone to create pockets.
  • Mix the pomfrets with salt, turmeric, chili powder and lime juice in a bowl and thoroughly rub. Set aside for marination for 20 minutes.
  • Soak green chilies in little warm water for 10 minutes. Strain excess water.
  • Combine coconut with coriander, chilies, onion, garlic, tamarind pulp, lime juice and salt and grind to a fine paste or chutney.
  • Stuff each pomfret pocket with this chutney and dust both sides of the fish with rice flour.
  • Heat the oil in a pan and shallow-fry the pomfrets on both sides till golden.
  • Serve hot.


  • 4 large pomfrets
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 200 grams grated fresh coconut
  • 4 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • 4 tablespoons rice flour
  • Salt to taste
