Preparation Method :

  • Soak thoor dal, in hot water for 15 minutes and pressure-cook for 5 whistles.
  • Soak tamarind in hot water and extract juice completely.
  • Chop the bitter gourd into semi-circular thin pieces.
  • Heat oil and allow mustard seeds to splutter. Now add chopped vegetable, turmeric powder, salt and the tamarind extract. Pressure-cook for a whistle.
  • Add 3 teaspoons of pitlai powder, curry leaves and the cooked dal. Stir, for 2 minutes. If the gravy is too thick, add a little water for correct consistency. Add a ΒΌ teaspoon of sugar or jaggery, if required to remove bitterness.
  • Serve hot with plain rice or dal rice. 


  • 200 grams of bitter gourd
  • 200 grams of thoor dal
  • 2 medium lemon-sized tamarind
  • A few curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon of Cooking oil
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 3 teaspoons of pitlai podi
  • Salt to taste
