Preparation Method :

  • Soak the chana dal in water for 1 hour. Drain.
  • Boil the soaked chana dal with the diced bottle gourd, salt, turmeric and water until done. Mash slightly with the back of a spoon and mix well. Set aside.
  • Heat a non-stick pan and add the oil. Add the cumin seeds and allow them to change colour slightly. Add the tomatoes and cook on a low heat until they soften.
  • Add the green chillies and asafoetida and continue to cook for 1 minute. Add the chilli powder and ground coriander and cook for another minute, until fragrant.
  • Add the chana dal mixture and stir well. Add the garam masala and sugar. Simmer for 2 minutes.
  • Stir in the lemon juice and garnish with the coriander leaves.


  • 200 grams split Bengal gram  
  • 350 grams bottle gourd, skinned and diced
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 2 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 4 green chillies, chopped pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 4 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 4 medium-sized tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 4 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
