BOBOTIE

Bobotie is a very unforgettable dish because of its unique preparation. Additional lemon juice and bread makes the dish more exciting to taste. And the sweet flavour of milk makes it more delicious. Anyone can make this dish even on their home.

30 minutes

1 hour

Preparation Method :

  • Soak the bread m the milk. Grease a pudding basin with a little margarine.
  • Gently fry the onion, garlic, celery and carrot in the margarine until cooked but not brown.
  • Stir in the curry powder, chutney, lemon juice and meat. Season well with salt and pepper.
  • Spoon into the pudding basin. Squeeze the milk from the bread, reserving the milk, and fork the bread into the meat mixture.
  • Mix the eggs with the reserved milk. Season well with salt and pepper. Pour the topping over the meat.
  • Arrange the blanched almond halves over the top. Cover with a piece of foil or greaseproof paper and tie down.
  • Place in a steamer or covered saucepan half-filled with simmering water and steam gently for 40 minutes or until the custard is set.
  • Serve sprinkled with chopped parsley.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 slice of white bread
  • 500 ml skimmed milk
  • 2 onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 4 celery stalks, roughly chopped
  • 8 carrots, peeled, sliced and cooked
  • 50 grams margarine
  • 6 teaspoons curry powder
  • 2 tablespoon mango chutney
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 1½ kg cooked meat, minced
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Topping

  • 4 eggs
  • 20 blanched almonds, toasted
  • Chopped parsley, to garnish
