The edible fruit of the Solanum lycopersicum plant, also referred to as the tomato plant, is the tomato. Southwest America, Mexico, and Central America are the natural habitats of this species. The Spanish term tomate, from which the English word tomato derives, was created by the Mexican word tomatl Nahuatl. The indigenous peoples of Mexico are responsible for its domestication and use as a cultivated food. The Spanish first saw tomatoes after coming into touch with the Aztecs, and after they did, they took this plant to Europe in a vast crop exchange known as the Colombian exchange. The Aztecs used tomatoes for cooking at the time the Spanish captured the Aztec Empire. nytimes crossword
