Preparation Method :

  • Grease shallow ovenproof dish (2 litre/ 8 cup capacity).
  • Place one-third of the potatoes over base of prepared dish, top with half of the rice and butter and a third of the cheeses.
  • Repeat layering with more potatoes, rice, butter and another third of the cheeses; top with remaining potatoes.
  • Press down lightly, pour over combined extra butter and pepper, sprinkle with remaining cheeses.
  • Bake, uncovered, in moderately hot oven about 1 hour or until potatoes are tender and top is browned.



  • 100 grams long-grain rice.
  • 1 kg old potatoes, peeled, thinly sliced
  • 200 grams cooked long-grain rice
  • 50 grams butter, chopped
  • 200 grams grated gruyere cheese
  • 200 grams grated tasty cheddar cheese
  • 50 grams butter, melted, extra
  • 1 teaspoon Szechwan pepper
