This simple relish can be served with most meals. It provides a contrast to hot curries, with its crunchy texture and refreshing ingredients.
Serves :

Preparation Time :
10 minutes

Cooking Time :
15 minutes

Preparation Method :

  • Char the tomatoes and green chillies directly over a flame. Put them in cold water and then peel. Puree together in a blender.
  • Heat the oil in a pan. Add the onion and saute until soft. Stir in the pureed tomatoes and chillies and cook on a high heat.
  • Add the chilli powder, crushed peppercorns, salt, cumin and garam masala and saute briefly. Stir in the coriander leaves and sugar and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Serve immediately, or cool and store in the fridge.


  • 5 large tomatoes
  • 6 large mild green chillies
  • 2 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 medium-sized onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 8 black peppercorns, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 4 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
